Gary Chang '71 Visits Senior School

Award-winning film composer Gary Chang ‘71 presented two days of small class presentations in the Peter J. Kountz Blackbox Theater in The Hillman Center for Performing Arts. He also gave an hour presentation to the entire Senior School student body in the Richard E. Rauh Theater on September 19.

Gary 's credits in film include The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Breakfast Club, Under Siege, The Walking Dead, The Substitute, and Miami Blues , among many others. He has also composed extensively for television, including The Crossing for the Arts & Entertainment Network, and Stephen King's Emmy Award-winning Storm of the Century for ABC. Chang is a recipient of the National Endowment of the Arts Grant for Jazz Composers and has won numerous awards, including the Gold Plaque at the Chicago International Film Festival in 1981.

The Alumni and Music Departments wanted to welcome Gary back after a long absence from SSA.  As a graduate of ‘71 he did not experience the richness of the performing arts that we now offer. We invited him to come and meet our students and share his experiences in the arts community. We hope that his words inspired each of us to think about our own place in the arts, whether it is as a profession, hobby or as a spectator.
