Shady Side Academy's spring musical, Fiddler on the Roof , was performed on March 7, 8 and 9 in the Richard E. Rauh Theater at the Hillman Center for Performing Arts.
Fiddler on the Roof is set in the little village of Anatevka, as Tevye, a poor dairyman, tries to instill in his five daughters the traditions of his tight-knit Jewish community in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Tzarist Russia. Tevye must cope with both the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters, as each daughter's choice of husband moves progressively farther away from established customs, and with the orders of the Tzar that evicts the Jews from their Russian village in 1905.
Academy Director of Theatre Arts, Ms. Mary Beth Gray directs, and Dr. Daniel Brill is the music director. Mr. Fred F. Gigler is the technical director. Ms. Laurie Tartar is the choreographer and Mrs. Julie Stahl is the costume designer.
The Hillman Center for Performing Arts provides the opportunity for over 100 students to participate in the cast, the crew, and the pit orchestra of Fiddler on the Roof .
