Shady Side Academy Middle School hosts third annual African American Read-In

The Middle School held its third annual African American Read-In on Monday, February 4, 2008.  The school registered as an official participant in the 19th annual African American Read-In, a national event sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English.  Each grade level gathered in a common area to read a piece of literature written by a black author.  The Sixth Grade read "The Slave Auction" from Day of Tears by Julius Lester; Form I read "Mitchell" and "The Stallion" from The Land by Mildred Taylor; and Form II read chapters 12 and 13 from Warriors Don't Cry by Melba Patillo Beals.  After silent reading, the students broke into advisory groups for discussion.
