Approximately 225 boys and girls in grades 6, 7 and 8 attend the Shady Side Academy Middle School. Located in Fox Chapel, a suburban area of Pittsburgh, on a 30-acre campus, our main school building, Benedum Hall, was once a private residence. Many of the distinctive architectural features of this beautiful home, built in the 1930's, have been retained in our classrooms. Several additions to the original house include a computer and a science lab, sixth grade wing, art facilities, a cafeteria and a gymnasium as well.
While at the Shady Side Academy Middle School, students are asked to embrace greater personal responsibility, respect themselves and others and realize that their decisions and actions have consequences. The expectations that come with the growing maturity of our Middle School students are supported by our committed and caring faculty.
Daily meetings with advisors and regularly scheduled conference periods allow students the opportunity to discuss issues as well as class work. Our faculty members average 18 years of teaching experience, with 85% holding advanced degrees. Our faculty mentor, coach, advise and encourage academic and personal growth both in and out of the classroom.
The Shady Side Academy Middle School offers a variety of athletic and extra-curricular activities. Participation in athletics is a requirement at both the Middle and Senior Schools. Students can choose from more than 30competitive and non-competitive options. Through participation in athletics students learn valuable lessons in teamwork and the importance of being physically active.
