The Shady Side Academy Senior School serves approximately 500 students in grades 9 – 12 and is located in Fox Chapel, a residential borough of Pittsburgh. Students can choose to live on campus during the week in our 5-Day Boarding Program or commute daily. Senior School students are engaged and challenged in small classes. Course schedules allow students to hone time management and decision-making skills, leaving students well prepared for independent college life.
In 2007, 25 Shady Side Academy Senior School students were inducted into the Cum Laude Society. Overall, in 2007, 87% of those students who wrote advanced placement (AP) exams earned a score of 3 or higher. In the 2006 National Merit Scholarship Program, there were 11 semi-finalists (10 became finalists), 11 commended students and one National Achievement Scholar. These students represent 18% of the Shady Side Academy Class of 2007.
100% of our seniors are accepted into four-year colleges. Our full-time college counseling staff helps guide students and parents through the college admission process.
Our faculty members average 18 years of teaching experience with 66% holding advanced degrees. Our faculty mentor, coach, advise and encourage academic and personal growth both in and out of the classroom.
Participation in athletics is a requirement at both the Middle and Senior Schools. Students can choose from more than 30 team and individual sports. Through participation in athletics students learn valuable lessons in teamwork, the importance of being physically active and how rewarding a little healthy competition can be.
Facilities at our Senior School Campus include the Hillman Center for Performing Arts, featuring a blackbox performance space, rehearsal rooms, and costume and set shops. We also have a visual arts center, and indoor hockey and swimming centers. Our main Senior School class room building, Rowe Hall, will re-open in Fall of 2006 renovated as a ‘green’ building.
